I got a type II but it has a VN35 on it.
Sounds fine, but should it have a VN15?
What am I missing?

thanks

The cart is working fine with a VN35.
Will it sound better with a VN15?
Has anyone tried both?
Can't verify but the VN15 seems like a bonded while the VN35 is nude?

One of us needs to try out the good Jico SAS and see how it compares!
There's just so many options!

I'm pretty much a line-contact/MR/shibata/etc or nothing guy (I know they're different but I hate elliptical diamonds). So I would like to get (for my III) an original VN-35mr or a Jico MRB but... it might end up being the Jico SAS. Supposedly the MRB is the Jico that sounds closest to an original 35mr.

My issue is that with the III, I have no original to compare it to (unlike my V)

My Dynavector Karat has an elliptical that at first I wasn't crazy about but changing/upgrading phono stages helped.

Those Jico SAS are crazy! they even have wood cantilevers!
I looked at them hard but this is only for a work rig and I got a type iii I'm fooling around with also.
I ordered a nude elliptical for the type ii and the HE for the type III.
Gotta be better than the bonded tips, non?

I got the type iii on the VPI right now and I gotta admit, it's sounding good.
Different, but not a let down.
If I decide to keep in the regular rotation I'll spring for the MR.

JohnVF, if you wanna try the cheapo bonded (Pfanstiehl), when I get the new tips in I'll send one of these off to you. I'll have two VN35E, one too many!

We could go half and half on one.

Yikes. I didn’t even know they had a $500 one with a ruby cantilever. And that’s $500 real dollars. So about $12000 Canadian.

VN15 on top, LP Gear branded elliptical
VN35 on bottom, guessing Pfanstiel elliptical
Both are bonded I think.

Slight physical difference I think the size of the 'stem.'
Maybe not? I'll mic them later.

The VN15 is louder, like more than a few dbs. If I had to guess probably more than 5, like close to 20.
SQ sounds the same, though it's on the work system, not exactly ultra revealing.
They are both ellipticals so no surprise there.

Probably not a good idea to run a VN35 on a type II.

They do look quite a bit different in size, but the angle makes it hard to tell.

You have to go back in time for a stock Shure stylus at that price.
For VN5MR anyway, the $50 deal that Shure had was a limited time deal to blow out all of their stock, certainly not their MSRP. And I can't tell you how many times I've kicked myself for not finding a way to afford several more and store them away for the future. The quality of these weren't as good as the original VN5MR that had the serial number on the front (as the "reborn" VN5MRs were made in Mexico), but still better than what was out there.

The only Jico SAS I heard, on a V15VxMR, sounded like ass, so I had no desire to ruin the V15's sound by trying one myself.

I haven’t heard much good about anything related to the VxMR, jico, Shure, or otherwise.

The only "bad" thing I've heard wasn't so much "bad," but an observation by some--the VxMR was perhaps a little "darker" than the VMR. (And it's hard to say if that could have been related to the arm and table they were mounted on.) But otherwise the same cart, with the same stylus/cantilever configuration. I don't know why they made the VxMR, as the VN5MR and VN5xMR replacements were not interchangeable for some reason.

The Jico SAS I heard on the VxMR was bright and nasty, and did not flow through the grooves as quietly as a genuine Shure (or the Nagaoka MP500 I have).

Both fit fairly snug.
My guess is some kind of impedance difference given the output.
So, there you go.
