The best of the rest. My spare-gear system.

Enjoying the audio voyage, gives me ideas for the bedroom system too! Only one thing; are the spikes digging into the wood floors (ouch)? I imagine they help ground the sound though.
I had bought some floor protectors/spike cups (?) for my living room stands, which killed the sound there..something specific to how the thin walled Harbeths want to freely resonate I think. Anyway, I put those things under the much heavier stands here because yes, they'd scar the floors. These stands are HEAVY, and I don't even have filling in them.

Well dang if there aren't things I like about both the Mullard and Siemens 12au7s. But out of nowhere came an unmarked tube, except for the important "12AU7A" to take it...I think its an early RCA based on the 12au7a label? One of you would probably know. Sounds very balanced.

I want to reassure you that, in my opinion, you have your priorities in the correct order: Stereo first, tree later. ;)
Alejandra, my wife, will not be back for probably a month so I can play as long as I want. I'll see her before then, just in Chicago, not here.

She calls what I'm doing "stereo Tetris." "Oh, I see you were playing stereo Tetris again. Did anything fall on you?"

This stems from how the closet in my old apartment was arranged. Like...Tetris!

Which reminds me, my Christmas tree is still up... I was supposed to take that down today instead of playing with my stereo(s).
Even though today would have been our usual day to take down the tree it hasn't happened here, either. I wish the delay were do to something as fun as playing with the stereo, but my dear dog Magnus is in his last days and the focus has been on keeping him comfortable and getting him to eat a bit. The stereo gets played, but mostly just the tuner.

Having said all of that there are some traditions where the tree stays up until Candlemas (Feb 2nd) so maybe we'll go with that this year. Hah.

I have a closet like that as well. This time of year I find the usual Tetris to be in the refrigerator....

There are more important things than stereo. I'm sorry to hear about your dog, I can't imagine losing my own. Cosmo, our Scottish terrier has become the biggest part of our lives, everything we do seems to have something to do with him, and he's probably saved our marriage given the two-city thing we have going because of where our jobs happen to be. They don't live long but they pack in several lifetimes of friendship and love into what they have. All my thoughts to your family and Magnus.

Very sorry to hear this. Our Aussies are our kids and losing them would be devastating.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Thanks for the empathy, all. Magnus and I have been through a lot together - the ending of my previous marriage, being essentially homeless for half a year after the house was hit by lightning, so many things. He really is the most easy-going, friendly creature I've met on this earth and when his time comes (as soon it must) there will be a huge void left behind. I've had a number of dogs in my life over the past quarter century, but the two of us just have a very special bond I've not experienced with a four-leg before. I never had to train him, he just always wanted to do what I asked. No bad thing in a 140 lb dog! Here are a couple of pics of him.

One taken just before Christmas. He is a true Snow Dog. Over the past three weeks or so he has lost a lot of weight and is leaner than he has been since he was a wee pup.

My wife and I had a two city thing going for quite awhile and I can say it was really a relief when she sold up in MI and moved here to Windsor.

John,

Very cool. Looks like a system that lots of folks would call a primary system!

I'm doing something similar, but in this case, it is in the basement (wife won't approve of cramming more audio gear into the bedroom - that's what the Fisher Medalist 2 console is for). Hacked up Vandersteen Model IIs, Fisher 660A amp, APT Holman preamp, and a Technics SL10 (:)) turntable. Sounds remarkably good for an odds & sods system.

(and by hacked-up, I mean the prior owner chopped off the socks & sock frames)

John do you think the ELACs are better overall speakers than the Cabasse (Sloops I think)?

At quieter listening levels I think the Elacs are the better speaker, but the Cabasses play better louder. The Cabasses could really use a crossover rebuild, I think, though they're likely getting sold. They've been in storage for awhile, replaced in our small Chicago apartment with bookshelf speakers to save space.

When played very loudly the Elacs kind of lose it, hitting a wall because of their size and other limitations. It seems to be where the compromise is in them... they're composed and sound fantastic up to a point, then just get boomy, the bass getting one-note after a certain volume. Below that point, and I really like them...though if I had the room, the Quads would be in here. They were in my bedroom in Chicago, so it wouldn't be the first time. But that room was twice the size of this one.

The boominess seems to stem from having the rear port to close to the rear wall. Stuffing it helps that out but limits the bass response, and I can't really pull them farther out. They really need to be about 3' from the wall.

The room always ends up having the final say, doesn't it?

You could try stuffing them with aquarium filter foam. It’s MUCH more open than other kinds of foam and it might be a good compromise. I have a couple densities of it around somewhere. I can cut you some plugs using my UB5’s to prototype and mail them to you. Let me see if I can find it tomorrow and make some. I’ll PM you if I find it.

That would be awesome, thank you. I tried just stuffing them with socks and that didn't work. Too much stuffing.

Another thing I'm going to try is my Dynaco Stereo 70. It was turned into quite a lovely sounding amp by the previous owner, with the exception of the lowest bass which rolls off a bit. This might be exactly what these speakers need in this room. The VAC is particularly exuberant in the bass department. Dude likes to party.
