There's A YouTube Channel for Every Bias

Amazingly enough, a guy calling himself Cheap Audio Man, goes to a high end show and trashes most of the things he hears. Having attended many of those shows in the past, I've always looked at it more as a place to see good gear then to actually be able to hear what that gear might sound like in a proper listening environment. But, this dude doesn't care about that stuff, and just uses it as an excuse to mock the gear and increase his views.

It saddens me actually, because I've enjoyed a number of his videos describing good quality inexpensive gear that is NOS available. I just hate the tribalism of all of it.

Only video of his that I've seen. Can't say I understand how having a POV is tribalism.

I wouldn’t disagree with his argument that for many high-end speakers there seems to be a very strong, an overly-strong focus on the upper-midrange and treble … which isn’t always my cuppa.

But there really isn’t a good way to determine how a speaker sounds at an audio show. At least not so that you can state it as categorically As he did. You can pretty well state exactly what you did. That is, that it isn’t to your taste.

Kind of odd that a "Cheap Audio Man" would go to a show and waste his time looking at spendy gear. Oh wait, YouTube channel.

YouTube: The Hyde Park of the internet.
And I think that would lend itself to a description of tribalism. He reviews, and his viewers tune in to hear his opinion on, affordable audio gear. So let's go to a show and bag on some expensive gear. Good for views and the tribe can all gather together and agree on how expensive gear is a waste of money.

Seemed to me ~half the stuff he talked about negatively he classified as not too expensive if it performed well.

Maybe his motivation was disingenuous, or maybe not. Seemed like his first show and that he didn’t know what to expect. Or I’m a sucker.

If you read the comments below (Beside) the video he posted, his motivation for visiting there became very clear.

Who knows? I may be overly skeptical of motivations. I have the same opinion on some reviewers that go to shows and sing praises of the ridiculously expensive gear. They are part of a tribe that I think is biased toward the more expensive, the better the sound.

Valid. I may be less sensitive to the video as his sentiments aren’t dissimilar to my own.

I'd be just as bothered if a reviewer from one of the high end mags went to a show of affordable gear, and crapped all over it for not being as great as his six figure system. The only thing I really hope from reviewers is fairness.

I didn't watch the video so I can't comment on it but I will say cheap audio man's recommended component list (in the description of all his videos) is pretty excellent. I cannot keep up with new stuff because I have no interest in it but if a friend or colleague who just wants to enjoy music asks me for advice I point them to his channel

I’ve enjoyed his channel for just those kind of reviews. Particularly the stuff that is beneath the notice of the big magazines.

I don't think you are being overly skeptical of his motivations, and I'd bet a fair few rooms he entered quickly arrived at what his true motivations were and tossed his ass right out, as they should have.
