Today's Jazz Playlist

I was unaware of George Russell before seeing these posts. Enjoying it right now. You'd almost think Mingus was involved at times.

Yes, I am glad I ran across this being played at Axpona. I really like this style, reminds me of some of the Gill Evan's recordings from that era. Accessible, 'post-bop with ideas from the avant-garde that does not fall into any category.'

Not often something new gets stuck in the play it again pile.

This one did.

Love how he hints at The Beatles on Four Banana 4 Banana.

Revisiting some of the better tunes I heard at Axpona this year.

This one has gone to the top of the digital stack.

I think I like this because it is jazz that does not sound like typical jazz charts.

Or maybe I like about anything that features Art Farmer, Jim Hall & Steve Swallow?

Or maybe it is just my Scandinavian blood?

I will gladly admit that in my pleasure to finally hear a good and genuine jazz quartet album again, I squeeze with solid dice. But then trumpeter Tore Johansen next to composing some great melodies really found the tone with bass veteran Steve Swallow, pianist Lars Jansson and drummer Anders Kjellberg. The latter with Harvey Mason's lace and Jarle Vespestad's sense of cunning details.

It starts so playfully and elegantly with Tore Johansen's title cut, while it all ends with Steve Swallow's unlikely gorgeous ballad Item # 7 a seven-minute-long gem where the musicians' joy of spending some great maid days in a studio in Bodø has really done their best to speed up the musical lyrics. IS is as rare as a traditional jazz album in simple and straightforward quartet format. There are no long, floating trumpets, untidy percussions or other modern fixes. This is just pure jazz, composed and recorded by someone who just wants you well.

( I think this means he liked it)
