Z19 crossover vs. GPA off the shelf

I have seen several recommendations for the Z19 crossover. What would the approximate cost be to build them and are they really an improvement over what I can just buy from GPA? thanks

I could be wrong but maybe the advantage ov the Zilch is you can bi-amp?
I went with the Werner's ( mass_mutter) crossovers, from eBay. I feel like there a universal praise of his work. Mine were for Valencia's if that matters.

Yeah i read 6 or 7 years of that thread. Maybe thats why I went with the Mass_mutter. 🤷‍♂️

Marantzfan built the ones in my 19's so would know what he spent about 6 years or so ago.

I have no experience with the GPA crossover, but I felt that Z19 was an upgrade over the stock network in the model 19.

I want to say that I spent about $200 with the parts I used?

With that said, you could probably get away with $150 or the sky's the limit if you want to go with boutique parts.

If you are comfortable with a little solder, I'd suggest building one. I like to tinker and so being able to choose each specific component to me is a big selling point versus an "off the shelf" network.

Is there a parts list and a schematic out there somewhere that is confirmed correct? I see a lot of them on the thread but no confirmation that any of them are correct.

Here is an image of the schematic:

and here is a layout one fella put together (not me). Sorry about the photobucket garbage. Couldn't find a version that didn't have it.

What is the primary difference between this and the Altec 19 stock crossover? Can you send me a picture of the completed ones you made?

The completed ones I made were in the link @Drugolf shared above towards the bottom of that page. :)

Those were the first networks I ever built.

My avatar is a pic of my build of a stock Model 19 build. I read all I could about the Z19 build and I saw where several folks went back to the stock design after building it. To me that was very telling.
I compared the schematics of both designs at the time and and there was just a few minor differences, almost the same design.
Here is the post on AK about mine.

Messed around when I had my 19's. Built a Z19, Tried BMS drivers and his praised JBL horn. Went back to my recapped stock crossovers, 802-Gs and 811. Going down the Zilch route got too far away from the Altec magic and what 19's are all about.

Marantzfan left the original crossovers in these 19's he restored so maybe I will recap them one day just so I can compare. Actually the guy I got them from took them out and a couple days later the estate sales manager called me because he had found them and the original woofers.

I will probably just go with the stock design from GPA. The reason I asked was because I had been down a similar path before with some bozaks and the Tobin mod to the crossovers. I liked the change initially but after awhile realized that I preferred the original better overall. thanks everyone

Sometimes you gotta stop and think about modifications to the design of crossovers. Although it may be 40 years ago, they did have the same components we use today and if they took the time to test and listen to what they were putting together, their ears were as good as ours. No, they didn't have the computer testing capabilities we do today, but maybe their ears were better trained. Especially on the top end stuff. Replacing those old caps etc with what should be considered better versions to day are most often the biggest improvement one can make.
The good thing is this little culture of ours here will find the ones that weren't designed as well as they could have been.
