Meet Lola. My Otari MX-5050 BII

So this is a Gene Walls restored Otari MX-5050 BII. He tears these down to the frame and rebuilds them. Not a cheap proposition, but if you want a deck that will outlast you? Calibrated and completely sorted, you pay the piper.

I’ll have to live vicariously through you.:)

Very nice ! So is this to make ultra HQ needle drops or are you sitting on a stash of pre-recorded reel tapes ?

My recording capabilities are not up to my own personal standards so I will be acquiring tapes as the fun fund allows. The fact that my gear purchasing has slowed down considerably as I settle down for the foreseeable future makes this somewhat possible. But I have been inquiring about tape to those that are into the medium and am always on the hunt for sources of quality tape.

I have a stash of older 7” tape that I was going to keep. But after going through an astounding amount of q-tips cleaning Lola after a session, I have decided that quality 10.5” 15 ips tape is where I want to remain. So I will be divesting of what little 7” tapes I have left. The hunt is part of the fun.

Very cool! Did you run into the guy at the 2019 NYC audio show who was developing a reel tape business ? By his own accounts, he somehow "owns" a warehouse full of Euro LP master tapes from a pressing plant and was selling tape dupes along with some very expensive restored machines. Wish I had written his name down but I'm sure you can find it with some google-fu.

He was partnered with the giant Chinese field-coil horn setup in the big ballroom. I sat and listened through a Joe Jackson album on reel that was pretty stellar.

I bet his info is in my picture thread from that day. Will have to go back and look. I had forgotten all about that. I bet he charges a premium for them though. That seems to be the norm for quality tape. I knew this going in so I am not complaining….much.

This format has me on such an emotional roller coaster. When it’s bad…it’s awful. But when it’s good…? It’s the best sound I have ever heard. But one thing is constant, it’s a tangible media that is a boat load of fun….and money….Le sigh.

The best audio I've ever heard has been tape, every damn time.
To the two of you; “Get behind me Satan!”;)
