Today, April 30th, 2016 is International Jazz Day.

As it turns out, my wife tells me that I have a special line up for the next couple of hours. I'm going to put on some Susannah McCorkle singing Cole Porter and rake up back yard.
At least it's sunny out.

Ah yes.....Jazz and raking leaves.

I know it well. ;)

I'm going with John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Tina Brooks, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Dave Brubeck. Maybe some Oliver Nelson, Grant Green. I'll probably mix in a few others as the mood suits me.

Hah, interesting you should mention Cole Porter, Kyle. When we got up at 6 this morning (not knowing it was Jazz Day) I put on the Fred Astaire album "Mr. Top Hat" that has Porter and Berlin tunes, and stellar musicians playing behind Astaire: Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Barney Kessell, Flip Phillips, Charlie Shavers, Alvin Stoller. A great way to bounce around in the kitchen getting breakfast together. Boy do I love FA's sense of timing — he may not hit every note with perfect pitch but who cares?

Later today some Claire Ritter, Baden Powell, and the great Cesar Camargo Mariano/Romero Lubambo album "Duo." Mariano is a fine pianist and arranger, and also was married to Elis Regina — one of the greatest vocalists ever, and a total star in Brasil for the few years she was alive. (Tragically, she died accidentally at 36, not realizing it was a bad idea to mix cocaine and alcohol with the anti-insomnia drug she was taking.) If any of you who read this don't know Elis, try her out! Maybe a good place to start is the record she made with Jobim, called "Elis & Tom" which has this tune on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBEesrdaRog

Next up: one of the Tord Gustavson Trio albums from the Ground-Being There-Changing Places trilogy, music that never gets old.
